Leading the Way: Dr. Lillie Mosaddegh First to Implant the Light Adjustable Lens+ in San Francisco

“In recognition of exceptional skill and commitment in performing Light Adjustable Lens procedures, and for providing world-class treatment to patients as they personalize their vision”- Rx Sight

Dr. Mosaddegh LAL award

Cataract surgery has entered a new era of personalization, and Dr. Mosaddegh is at the forefront— the first surgeon in San Francisco to implant the Light Adjustable Lens+ (LAL+), a breakthrough in post-operative vision correction.

Unlike traditional lens implants, the LAL and LAL+ are the only intraocular lenses (IOLs) that can be adjusted AFTER cataract surgery. This means patients can refine their visual outcome after healing—based on how their vision actually performs in real life.

What Makes the LAL+ Different?

Most cataract lenses are selected based on preoperative measurements and preferred visual outcomes centered around the patient’s lifestyle. Once implanted, the prescription is fixed. But even with today’s advanced diagnostics, some variability is inevitable—especially in patients with complex prescriptions or a history of LASIK, PRK, or RK.

The Light Adjustable Lens changes this approach. Made from a special photosensitive material, it allows surgeons to modify the lens power non-invasively after the eye has healed, using precisely targeted ultraviolet (UV) light.

With the LAL+, patients have the added advantage of enhanced light delivery and improved customization range—building on the foundation of the original LAL technology.

How the Process Works

  1. Surgery: Dr. Mosaddegh uses advanced femtosecond laser technology along with real-time ORA guidance during cataract surgery to ensure precise placement of the LAL+
  2. Healing: Over the next few weeks, the eye heals while the lens remains “adjustable.”
  3. Customization: In a series of in-office light treatments (up to 3) 1-2 weeks apart, Dr. Mosaddegh uses a Light Delivery Device to fine-tune the lens prescription—based on patient feedback and visual performance.
  4. Finalization: Once the desired clarity is achieved, 2 final light treatments lock the lens into its permanent shape and power.

Important note: Wearing the manufacturer-provided UV-protective sunglasses is essential to prevent unintended lens changes from sunlight exposure and ensure optimal vision adjustment. This is imperative until you’ve finished the adjustment & lock in process

Who May Benefit

Patients who:
● Prefer more control over their final visual outcome
● Have had previous refractive surgery (LASIK, RK, PRK)
● Want to minimize reliance on glasses but aren’t comfortable committing to a fixed lens choice upfront

This technology shifts the focus from estimation to personalization—bridging the gap between surgery and real-world visual needs.

A Step Forward in Cataract Care

As more patients seek tailored outcomes and fewer compromises, post-operative lens customization may represent one of the most meaningful advances in lens technology in decades.

If you’re exploring cataract surgery and interested in technologies that allow more flexibility and precision, the LAL and LAL+ represent a different path forward—one designed to adapt around your life, not just your prescription. Schedule an eye exam today to learn more!

Frequently Asked Questions

The LAL is a revolutionary intraocular lens used in cataract surgery that allows for post-operative adjustments. Unlike traditional lenses, its photosensitive material enables precise modifications to your vision after the eye has healed, using targeted ultraviolet (UV) light treatments.

Ideal candidates are individuals undergoing cataract surgery who desire precise vision correction and have specific visual needs that may require post-operative adjustments. It’s particularly beneficial for those with complex prescriptions, corneal irregularities or a history of refractive surgeries like LASIK.

Patients can achieve optimal vision correction tailored to their lifestyle. The LAL provides a level of customization not possible with traditional lenses.
